Spring 2016 Anime Reactions (Sunday) SPOILERS

Well the last day of anime... enjoy

Sunday (5 shows: 4 regular, 1 short)

Re:Zero-Starting Life in Another World-Scum Saving to the Rescue

Synopsis: Subaru is a high school student that finds himself in another world. He meets a silver haired girl who helps him get by. They are then confront by a witch who kills them but that is where Subaru realizes his power. The ability to go back to a certain point in time when he dies.

Positive: The gore and bloodiness is done well and isn't too distracting. Subaru is actually a pretty smart character and has fun interactions with all the other characters. Overall Subaru feel like a genuine character that has lots of layers. The time travel aspect is handled well and makes the story interesting.

Negative: I never understood these shows in the sense of, what is the point of him being transported to the world. Because of the backwards time travel, the story does not move forward quickly and I just get a little annoyed that I have to see the same thing three episodes in a row.

I originally wanted to finish this blog series about two weeks ago. If you asked me then what I thought about this show I would say it is good but feels generic and is not special. But after a few more episodes I really see the strengths and appeal of this show. First off, Subaru is a wonderful character and does not feel generic. He actually thinks critically about the situations. In the latest episode, he struggles with the power he has because he does not know anything about it. Most shows who probably have the character not worry about death and pretty just roll with it, but Subaru doesn't. He thinks about the fact that maybe it won't work and that he fears the unknown of his new power. That kind of realism is really cool. The other characters are cool and funny. Felt was cool, Emilia is wonderful and cute, Rem and Ram are funny maids, and Beatrice the drill haired loli is also a cool character. I really love the concept of the whole show. The fact that Subaru makes all this process with his friendships but then it is all taken away when he dies and pretty much has to start over. It is interesting to see how the story changes and how the characters and events changes when he takes different actions. I also thought it was cool that Subaru continues to help the characters despite the fact that they do not remember anything before he dies because even if they do not remember, he remembers the joy and understand that if he can save someone's life, he should because that is the right thing to do. That kind of motivation is awesome and really adds depth to his character. Now I just do not understand this "sent form Earth to the new world" story line like in Grimgar. Like what is the point of his connection to the real world and why does it matter? Wouldn't the story work if he was just from a different country within the world? I feel like the "NEET" sent to the magical world trope is just a lame way for viewers to connect to the character. But overall, I stopped being pretentious about this anime and started enjoyed the anime. It has really grown on me.

Grade/Summary: A (Re:Zero has an interesting concept for a story that works really well with a fun cast and an MC that has lots of depth and layers, on top of his likability).

Kuma Miko-Cute Characters and Bears Can Only do so Much

Synopsis: Machi is a young girl in a village but she wants to leave the village and go to high school in the city. Her best friend is a talking bear that is worried about the idea of her in the city with her lack of knowledge in terms of technology and the modern world. Machi tries her best to convince the bear to let her go as she learn all about the modern world.

Positive: There are some funny and cute moments and I always like the trope that involves characters that are out of place with the normal world. Plus it has the cutest ending theme ever

Negative: The fan service in the first couple of episodes was weird. The flow of the show can feel pretty disjointed and awkward. The characters feel flat and have little to no depth to them.

This anime will probably become one of those anime that I fairly enjoy throughout the season and when it finishes, forget it ever exists. There is not too much that is memorable about the show. The characters have no development. The overarching story does not really move/advance. The show does not make it easy to like the supporting characters either. Machi's brother is an idiot but it is not likable and is more annoying. Hibiki just came off as a jerk for no reason and the show did a poor job at presenting her tsundere personality. The show is cute and there are some funny moments where she tries to understand technology and the city life. But the show just feels flat. The fan service on Machi just feel wrong at times and the characters do not really have much going for them. The last few episodes have been getting better but the show does not pop out to you.

Grade/Summary: C-(Cute and funny at times but the anime is dragged down by a dull cast and awkward moments that hurts the anime a lot).

Sansha Sanyou-The Cutest Show I Have Ever Seen

Synopsis: Youko Nishikawa is a daughter of a formerly rich family. Her dad becomes bankrupt and now she lives in a rundown apartment living off bread crusts. She then meets Teru, who is a the class president that despite her nice looks, has quite the bad side, and Futaba Odagiri who is energetic and always eating. Together they hang out and meet a variety of colorful characters.

Positive: Well animated and smooth. Funny and wild characters that have some depth. Literally one of the cutest, if not cutest, anime I have seen.

Negatives: Some of the supporting casts are nothing more than their gimmicks, and there is no overarching story.

When I saw this show on Funimation, I told myself "I already have 17-19 shows, this looks cute but if it is a show I won't watch this." I clicked the video and it was 24 mins long so I decide to watch it... and boy it no regrets. I love this show. Again I like slice of life and moe and this season has a lot of those shows but this may be the moest and cutest anime I have ever seen. Yes cuter than Is the order a rabbit, K-On, Non Non Biyori, Kiniro Mosaic, yes all of those anime in terms of cute is not better than this show. I mean look how cute this is and how well animated the background and anime is and how smooth it is. Although it hasn't been top quality lately, the first tow episodes had ridiculous great animation. That is just animation, the characters are the best part. When you do not have an overarching you need fun characters and they are all there. The best part about Youko is how she isn't trying to learn to penny pinch, she already has the poor life down. She loves bread crusts because they are cheap and puts mayonnaise on everything because again its cheap and she loves it. Futaba is also a cool character. She speaks her mind and I have to say she has a very interesting voice (that scene is cute, I know that she did not speak much, the brown hair, but she has a very distinct voice and I like it). Teru is amazing with her cute and low-key mean personality. It is not just them, most of the cast is fun. Teru's sister is sweet and adorable, Shino is a weirdo that makes the show wacky. Yamaji is also weird but sweet and funny. Nishiyama is adorable as well. It is also nice to see the depth of the characters. The fact that Youko does not want to turn off her new friends so she tries so hard to be nice and act normal. It is so endearing. The fact that Teru's sister makes horrible food by mixing healthy things together is sweet because she tries to make her sister healthy because she cares about her is cute. And the fact that Yamaji and Shino care so much about Youko (they used to work for her when she was rich) is so sweet. Now some of the other characters not mentioned can be gimmicky and one-dimensional and there really is no story or goal for most of the characters. But damn this show is so cute, so sweet and endearing at times with some sharp and great animation (Seriously, look at that fight scene that is some top notch animation). Knowing that this is the directors first anime directing, and this is the first major role for all the main voice actresses, I can't help but respect the work they have done. I think for 4 people to have their first big roles in some pretty important spots, they really hit it out of the park with this anime. From the opening that is just so upbeat and catchy that puts you in the mood, to the wacky crazy moments of the show, to the ending theme that is just as catchy, the anime is just a great ball of moe with unexpected character depth and likability. To think I was not going to watch this show.

Grade/Summary: S-(Some characters with gimmicks and no overarching story does not stop this moe anime with some amazing animation, wonderful characters that entertain you for the whole 24 minutes and some of the cutest characters I have ever seen, this anime always leaves me with a dumb smile and a great mood from start to finish... It may not be the best anime of the spring but it is number one in terms of cat snuggles... nyan).

Boku no Hero Academia-How to Take the Generic and Unoriginal and Make it Amazing

Synopsis: Deku is a nerd who loves and wants to be a superhero in a world every almost everyone has a special ability and superheros is a regular occupation. But he discovers that he is one of the lucky ones without power. Deku, through hard work and a creative mind with a strong will, tries to be the strongest hero ever.

Positive: All the characters are lovable and entertaining. Deku has to be one of the best, adorable, and relatable main characters ever and you just want to see him succeed and root for him. The action sequences are wonderfully animated and get you hyped up. I am also big on themes and I think the anime presents it's theme so sincerely and beautifully.

Negative: Deep down in it's narrative, it isn't original and the overarching story is pretty basic... but the show does a great job at making it fun

My friends were telling me this was one of the most popular shounen manga, so I was expecting some generic but fun. I thought this would be a silly and cool anime coming in but I did not think there would be much within the story... boy was I surprised by the roller coaster of emotions in the first two episodes. Not only is this so highly entertaining and awesome, the depth and development of the main character, Deku, is amazing. The anime does a fantastic job at showing how he feels and the struggles he goes through. Getting picked on by his childhood friend who bullies him all day, all his classmates laugh and make fun of the fact that he has no powers. Doctors tell him to give up on being a hero, his mom stops believe, even his idol, All Might, tells him to give up. You connect and understand his shortcomings well. Believing in yourself is a problem that we all can relate to and the anime does a great job at recreating that feeling and making you cheer on the characters. This also has to be the best two episode start to any anime I have ever seen. All Might is such an awesome guy and hero and the action scenes with him are just so full of hype that you get pumped up. I would love to write about the first two episodes and write about how well the anime shows off the theme of believing in yourself. I think for a anime that is directed towards young teenage kids, I love it when they have such a sweet theme, believing in yourself, and especially if they execute it well. Deku is just so great. The way he uses his brain to wits to solve the shortcomings is great and does not make the show dull. He does not just punch his way through, he actually thinks about the situation and uses his brain to bring the best result. And to see him work hard and actually earn his powers and success instead of randomly inheriting it is just so great to see. I think I am being a fan boy for this anime and this section but man I just love this anime. I love the theme and how it presents itself. I love the characters and how relatable they are, I love the action scenes because they are pure hype, I just love everything about this show. I suggest everyone watch the first two episodes because it is just amazing. Is it a creative story? not really. And with start so great, the anime can not possibly keep up that level of quality. But even after the amazing two episode start the anime still provides us with amazing action sequences and great character development. I thought I was getting something basic but instead I got something unexpectedly amazing and inspiring

Grade/Summary: S+ (An unoriginal story that is executed beautifully with a cast of adorable and likable characters, actions scenes that get you hyped up, and a theme that is so genuine that it is inspiring, this is the best anime of the spring to me).

My reaction to when I realized how good this anime was.

Pan de Peace! (short)-Cute Girls and Bread
Pan de Peace!

Synopsis: A group of cute girls bond for their love of bread products

Positive: It is really cute

Negative: There is no depth to the show besides that

This one will be short and sweet... if you like cute stuff then you will like this if not then you won't. I understand what this anime will be like and I do not mind watching a cute anime after something tense like Re:Zero or something hyped up like Boku no Hero Academia so its okay to me. But meh there really isn't any substance to the anime.

Grade/Summary: C- (It is cute and if you like that then you'll like this, if not meh you're not missing much).

Well there it is, I will make a review and end post that will show a complete 1-20 ranking so I will do that immediately after this one is posted. Thanks for reading!
