Midseason Summer 2016 Anime Impresisons

Hello Everyone reading, here are my unedited and quick impressions of the summer 2016 anime I have watched.

The Dropped:

Qualidea Code (3 eps watched)

For some reason, I thought that since this was an original concept and not some adaptation, that maybe it would better than the other generic battle harem anime... but it wasn't. There is all the usual and uninteresting tropes at play here. The edgy badass MC that doesn't need anyone's help. The female childhood friend that loves him. The bro-sis combo that hints at incest love. The ditzy airhead that is a bit wacky. The music was okay but none of the characters stood out and it just felt like a half-assed attempt at the battle anime with all the bland characters.

Rewrite (6 eps watched)

I probably stuck with this one longer than I should have because I actually the MC attitude towards everything but this was confusing to watch. The plot isn't clear until episode 6 and even then I still don't what it REALLY is about. I never even figured out where his powers are from. The side characters are not very interesting either. It also does not help that the show tries to smash all this backstory and detail in one episode and they just move on without building on top of the development they already established. The pacing story wise is just jacked up which makes it too hard to care for any of the characters.

The Below Average But Watchable:

Ace Attorney: Second Cour

This is the second half of the season which started in the spring and it is not much different from the first half. The tone is still oddly happy for a guy that is trying to solve murder cases. Mayoi is still cute as hell but the atmosphere is just too odd for me to completely enjoy this. The cases and characters involved are just not interesting enough for you to care if they go to jail or not. Mayoi adorable personality and comedic moments are probably the only thing I look for in this show.

The Morose Mononokean

Mildly surprised me with how fun the story was. Although it kind of slowed down the last few episodes and has gotten formulaic (monster of the week) I do like the comedy and premise of the show. Now the animation is not impressive and again it is formulaic but I like the dynamic of the two main characters. Now the soft scenes doesn't hit well and nothing about this show is really memorable but I do not regret watching this... plus the fluffy white ball is cute as shit.

The "Okay" Shows:

Alderamin on the Sky

This show is just really okay to me. I like the action, the alpha attitude of the MC, and the talk of war strategy is cool. But I find other aspects boring. I think the premise and story is generic, none of the characters are unique except of the MC, I don't get what the pocket fairies are suppose to be, and there is no real development for any of the characters after 6 episodes. There is some good but there is also some bad. This show really just falls down the middle for me. Overall the show just isn't leaving an impression to me.

91 Days

Started off great. The story of revenge, the setting I have never seen before (gangster prohibition era), and the action scenes are cool. But the show is losing a lot of it's charm from the start. It is just kind of getting... boring since not much has developed with the MC's plan for revenge. The story has just slowed down a lot and the pacing is just slow with how stagnant the plot of progressing. It is not disappointed me like how Gangsta and Joker Game has with this adult and grown up story and setting anime, but it has not been awesome. Good but its getting kind of boring now.

Tales of Zestiria the X

Big fan of the game and series and the adaptation has been... okay (well obviously since the show is in the okay group). The action is cool (thanks Ufotable) the animation is good, and even with the generic characters, I find Sorey to be a very likable MC. Now on top of the super generic characters and story line, I think the pacing is just confusing and too fast. They zoom by the story and I believe, as a player of the game, that they assume the viewer knows the game and story. The show can be confusing for someone that hasn't played the game (especially since they randomly threw in 2 episodes from the newest game in there that is not really relevant to the main story). Overall okay and passable adaptation to the fan side of me.

The "Good" Show

Mob Psycho

I am not totally sold on the story yet and I find it hard to be completely invested in the characters... that being said, I am having a fun time with this show. The scenes where Mob using his power are awesome and the action looks amazing. While I wrote that I am invested in the characters, I do think the characters are interesting and have a good amount of depth to them. The comedic scenes are really funny and the body building club my be the biggest and best bros I am ever seen in anime. The animation takes a while to get used to but I do like it after a few minutes. A real fun time.

Relife (9 eps watched)

I have seen 9 episodes and overall a fun time. The reaction faces are priceless. The humor is genuinely funny. The characters are likable and I like how the anime handles the themes its presents and how the MC reflects on his past. Now I think the anime is focusing a little too much on the red hair girl and not enough on the main female and male MC. Not the best thing I have ever seen but definitely a really fun anime.

Orange

The melodrama of the season and it has been pretty intense in terms of drama. I like the interactions and I think all of the MC's actions have made sense given her circumstances. Although all the soft and sweet scenes, while done well overall, just isn't making me cry. I believe the show has some moments that make you want to cry but it is just not executing in the fullest. I am not crying and for a melodrama I think that is a bit of a negative. The art is nice and the development of the MC is apparently and feels realistic. Overall a solid show and if you're into sad romances then this is for you.

Amanchu

Soft, cozy, and relaxing. It has a Flying Witch cozy vibe to it. The reaction faces were creepy at first but after a while you get used to it and it actually gets pretty cute. The art and animation is amazing and the interactions between Pikari and the other characters are fun. If you're not into the slice of life, calm, slow vibe anime then this isn't for you, but otherwise the show does execute what it wants beautifully with great animation, character personalities, and atmosphere.

This Art Club Has A Problem!

The wonderful surprise of the season. The premise does not sound original and the show does a lot of the typical middle school romantic comedy jokes (there are a lot of jokes center around misunderstanding between the characters which can be a bit annoying). But Usami is a wonderful, sweet and fun MC. Although I think she carries the show too much a lot of the times. But I do think the other supporting cast are interesting and unique enough to complement her well. With some genuine moments thrown in with some good comedic moments that isn't too dependent on the otaku gimmick , this art club is the biggest surprise of the season.

Lovelive Sunshine!

Speaking of other surprises, Lovelive Sunshine is the other pleasant surprise. Although the show is definitely not original since it takes a lot of elements, especially in the story department, from the original. At the same time, I do appreciate that the show does not shy away from the comparisons and shamelessly acknowledges them a lot of the time (which is a good thing). Improved performance animation makes the songs more bearable to watch. The characters are also adorable and the show still has that nice charm and oddly some good comedic moments. But I do love that there is actually character development in this group and depth to their personality. Honestly if the anime keeps it up, I think this will be better than the original. Another good surprise.

The Favorites:

Re:Zero

Builds on the great first half with more suffering and more painful moments for the MC. Subaru is one of the most interesting character I have ever seen. The development he goes through has been great and all of it seems reasonable and believable. Not much to say since I wrote about this one in the last post but it is more of the good stuff that makes this show enjoyable. An interesting character with some really intense moments.

Food Wars Season 2

The second season of the over the top cooking show starts off where it left off and does not skip a single beat. The anime still offers some great and epic moments with some crazy and wild fan service (that feels good in this case). The show does not do anything different from the first 24 episode but that is a wonderful thing. the show is still fast and fun. Wild and over the top. A pot full of fun that never stops giving.

New Game
!

Ahh the cute moe dogakobo show of the season... and its great. One of the cutest shows I have ever seen and the cutest of the season. If you are looking for some insight in the video game industry, I am sorry you're not getting that. But lots of cute moments and some fan service (if you like that kind of stuff). Some nice themes about working hard and believe in your dreams are nice when they happen and this anime is just so... gay.... in a good way. the Yuri tease is just irresistible and its fun to ship the characters. If you like slice of life then this is the show for you.

Planetarian

When you put it all together, the look of the show, the premise, the fact that it is originally from Key, you already get the idea that its is going to be sad and you're going to cry a lot. And that is the reason I love the anime. It understands what it is about and does what it wants. The animation is nice especially the part where the robot give him the space show. And I thought that the final scene was sweet, sincere and wonderful. now the episodes range from 13 minutes to 24 and there are only five episodes but I believe that this is definitely worth your time.

Sweetness and Lightning

Nothing is more sweet and beautiful than a nice father-daughter anime. This anime is probably the most heartwarming you will ever see. The show just feels really authentic when it comes to the relationship and interactions between the MC and his daughter. Kotori, the high school girl learning to cook, is wonderful and definitely one of the best girls of the season. There are lots of realistic and sweet moments throughout the show. I also love the fact that they have an actually child voicing the daughter to just make it all more authentic. One of the most heartwarming and best anime of the season.

That is all the shows. If you want to know the premise you can google search the show name (too lazy to link it all sorry). But here is a "best of" section to cap off the post. Hope you enjoyed my general opinions and writing!

Top 3 Anime:
1.Sweetness and Lightning
2.New Game!
3. Planetarian

Best Surprises: LoveLive Sunshine, This Art Club Has A Problem

Most disappointing: Alderamin on the Sky

Best Ending: Food Wars, Planetarian

Spring 2016 Anime Reactions (Sunday) SPOILERS

Well the last day of anime... enjoy

Sunday (5 shows: 4 regular, 1 short)

Re:Zero-Starting Life in Another World-Scum Saving to the Rescue

Synopsis: Subaru is a high school student that finds himself in another world. He meets a silver haired girl who helps him get by. They are then confront by a witch who kills them but that is where Subaru realizes his power. The ability to go back to a certain point in time when he dies.

Positive: The gore and bloodiness is done well and isn't too distracting. Subaru is actually a pretty smart character and has fun interactions with all the other characters. Overall Subaru feel like a genuine character that has lots of layers. The time travel aspect is handled well and makes the story interesting.

Negative: I never understood these shows in the sense of, what is the point of him being transported to the world. Because of the backwards time travel, the story does not move forward quickly and I just get a little annoyed that I have to see the same thing three episodes in a row.

I originally wanted to finish this blog series about two weeks ago. If you asked me then what I thought about this show I would say it is good but feels generic and is not special. But after a few more episodes I really see the strengths and appeal of this show. First off, Subaru is a wonderful character and does not feel generic. He actually thinks critically about the situations. In the latest episode, he struggles with the power he has because he does not know anything about it. Most shows who probably have the character not worry about death and pretty just roll with it, but Subaru doesn't. He thinks about the fact that maybe it won't work and that he fears the unknown of his new power. That kind of realism is really cool. The other characters are cool and funny. Felt was cool, Emilia is wonderful and cute, Rem and Ram are funny maids, and Beatrice the drill haired loli is also a cool character. I really love the concept of the whole show. The fact that Subaru makes all this process with his friendships but then it is all taken away when he dies and pretty much has to start over. It is interesting to see how the story changes and how the characters and events changes when he takes different actions. I also thought it was cool that Subaru continues to help the characters despite the fact that they do not remember anything before he dies because even if they do not remember, he remembers the joy and understand that if he can save someone's life, he should because that is the right thing to do. That kind of motivation is awesome and really adds depth to his character. Now I just do not understand this "sent form Earth to the new world" story line like in Grimgar. Like what is the point of his connection to the real world and why does it matter? Wouldn't the story work if he was just from a different country within the world? I feel like the "NEET" sent to the magical world trope is just a lame way for viewers to connect to the character. But overall, I stopped being pretentious about this anime and started enjoyed the anime. It has really grown on me.

Grade/Summary: A (Re:Zero has an interesting concept for a story that works really well with a fun cast and an MC that has lots of depth and layers, on top of his likability).

Kuma Miko-Cute Characters and Bears Can Only do so Much

Synopsis: Machi is a young girl in a village but she wants to leave the village and go to high school in the city. Her best friend is a talking bear that is worried about the idea of her in the city with her lack of knowledge in terms of technology and the modern world. Machi tries her best to convince the bear to let her go as she learn all about the modern world.

Positive: There are some funny and cute moments and I always like the trope that involves characters that are out of place with the normal world. Plus it has the cutest ending theme ever

Negative: The fan service in the first couple of episodes was weird. The flow of the show can feel pretty disjointed and awkward. The characters feel flat and have little to no depth to them.

This anime will probably become one of those anime that I fairly enjoy throughout the season and when it finishes, forget it ever exists. There is not too much that is memorable about the show. The characters have no development. The overarching story does not really move/advance. The show does not make it easy to like the supporting characters either. Machi's brother is an idiot but it is not likable and is more annoying. Hibiki just came off as a jerk for no reason and the show did a poor job at presenting her tsundere personality. The show is cute and there are some funny moments where she tries to understand technology and the city life. But the show just feels flat. The fan service on Machi just feel wrong at times and the characters do not really have much going for them. The last few episodes have been getting better but the show does not pop out to you.

Grade/Summary: C-(Cute and funny at times but the anime is dragged down by a dull cast and awkward moments that hurts the anime a lot).

Sansha Sanyou-The Cutest Show I Have Ever Seen

Synopsis: Youko Nishikawa is a daughter of a formerly rich family. Her dad becomes bankrupt and now she lives in a rundown apartment living off bread crusts. She then meets Teru, who is a the class president that despite her nice looks, has quite the bad side, and Futaba Odagiri who is energetic and always eating. Together they hang out and meet a variety of colorful characters.

Positive: Well animated and smooth. Funny and wild characters that have some depth. Literally one of the cutest, if not cutest, anime I have seen.

Negatives: Some of the supporting casts are nothing more than their gimmicks, and there is no overarching story.

When I saw this show on Funimation, I told myself "I already have 17-19 shows, this looks cute but if it is a show I won't watch this." I clicked the video and it was 24 mins long so I decide to watch it... and boy it no regrets. I love this show. Again I like slice of life and moe and this season has a lot of those shows but this may be the moest and cutest anime I have ever seen. Yes cuter than Is the order a rabbit, K-On, Non Non Biyori, Kiniro Mosaic, yes all of those anime in terms of cute is not better than this show. I mean look how cute this is and how well animated the background and anime is and how smooth it is. Although it hasn't been top quality lately, the first tow episodes had ridiculous great animation. That is just animation, the characters are the best part. When you do not have an overarching you need fun characters and they are all there. The best part about Youko is how she isn't trying to learn to penny pinch, she already has the poor life down. She loves bread crusts because they are cheap and puts mayonnaise on everything because again its cheap and she loves it. Futaba is also a cool character. She speaks her mind and I have to say she has a very interesting voice (that scene is cute, I know that she did not speak much, the brown hair, but she has a very distinct voice and I like it). Teru is amazing with her cute and low-key mean personality. It is not just them, most of the cast is fun. Teru's sister is sweet and adorable, Shino is a weirdo that makes the show wacky. Yamaji is also weird but sweet and funny. Nishiyama is adorable as well. It is also nice to see the depth of the characters. The fact that Youko does not want to turn off her new friends so she tries so hard to be nice and act normal. It is so endearing. The fact that Teru's sister makes horrible food by mixing healthy things together is sweet because she tries to make her sister healthy because she cares about her is cute. And the fact that Yamaji and Shino care so much about Youko (they used to work for her when she was rich) is so sweet. Now some of the other characters not mentioned can be gimmicky and one-dimensional and there really is no story or goal for most of the characters. But damn this show is so cute, so sweet and endearing at times with some sharp and great animation (Seriously, look at that fight scene that is some top notch animation). Knowing that this is the directors first anime directing, and this is the first major role for all the main voice actresses, I can't help but respect the work they have done. I think for 4 people to have their first big roles in some pretty important spots, they really hit it out of the park with this anime. From the opening that is just so upbeat and catchy that puts you in the mood, to the wacky crazy moments of the show, to the ending theme that is just as catchy, the anime is just a great ball of moe with unexpected character depth and likability. To think I was not going to watch this show.

Grade/Summary: S-(Some characters with gimmicks and no overarching story does not stop this moe anime with some amazing animation, wonderful characters that entertain you for the whole 24 minutes and some of the cutest characters I have ever seen, this anime always leaves me with a dumb smile and a great mood from start to finish... It may not be the best anime of the spring but it is number one in terms of cat snuggles... nyan).

Boku no Hero Academia-How to Take the Generic and Unoriginal and Make it Amazing

Synopsis: Deku is a nerd who loves and wants to be a superhero in a world every almost everyone has a special ability and superheros is a regular occupation. But he discovers that he is one of the lucky ones without power. Deku, through hard work and a creative mind with a strong will, tries to be the strongest hero ever.

Positive: All the characters are lovable and entertaining. Deku has to be one of the best, adorable, and relatable main characters ever and you just want to see him succeed and root for him. The action sequences are wonderfully animated and get you hyped up. I am also big on themes and I think the anime presents it's theme so sincerely and beautifully.

Negative: Deep down in it's narrative, it isn't original and the overarching story is pretty basic... but the show does a great job at making it fun

My friends were telling me this was one of the most popular shounen manga, so I was expecting some generic but fun. I thought this would be a silly and cool anime coming in but I did not think there would be much within the story... boy was I surprised by the roller coaster of emotions in the first two episodes. Not only is this so highly entertaining and awesome, the depth and development of the main character, Deku, is amazing. The anime does a fantastic job at showing how he feels and the struggles he goes through. Getting picked on by his childhood friend who bullies him all day, all his classmates laugh and make fun of the fact that he has no powers. Doctors tell him to give up on being a hero, his mom stops believe, even his idol, All Might, tells him to give up. You connect and understand his shortcomings well. Believing in yourself is a problem that we all can relate to and the anime does a great job at recreating that feeling and making you cheer on the characters. This also has to be the best two episode start to any anime I have ever seen. All Might is such an awesome guy and hero and the action scenes with him are just so full of hype that you get pumped up. I would love to write about the first two episodes and write about how well the anime shows off the theme of believing in yourself. I think for a anime that is directed towards young teenage kids, I love it when they have such a sweet theme, believing in yourself, and especially if they execute it well. Deku is just so great. The way he uses his brain to wits to solve the shortcomings is great and does not make the show dull. He does not just punch his way through, he actually thinks about the situation and uses his brain to bring the best result. And to see him work hard and actually earn his powers and success instead of randomly inheriting it is just so great to see. I think I am being a fan boy for this anime and this section but man I just love this anime. I love the theme and how it presents itself. I love the characters and how relatable they are, I love the action scenes because they are pure hype, I just love everything about this show. I suggest everyone watch the first two episodes because it is just amazing. Is it a creative story? not really. And with start so great, the anime can not possibly keep up that level of quality. But even after the amazing two episode start the anime still provides us with amazing action sequences and great character development. I thought I was getting something basic but instead I got something unexpectedly amazing and inspiring

Grade/Summary: S+ (An unoriginal story that is executed beautifully with a cast of adorable and likable characters, actions scenes that get you hyped up, and a theme that is so genuine that it is inspiring, this is the best anime of the spring to me).

My reaction to when I realized how good this anime was.

Pan de Peace! (short)-Cute Girls and Bread
Pan de Peace!

Synopsis: A group of cute girls bond for their love of bread products

Positive: It is really cute

Negative: There is no depth to the show besides that

This one will be short and sweet... if you like cute stuff then you will like this if not then you won't. I understand what this anime will be like and I do not mind watching a cute anime after something tense like Re:Zero or something hyped up like Boku no Hero Academia so its okay to me. But meh there really isn't any substance to the anime.

Grade/Summary: C- (It is cute and if you like that then you'll like this, if not meh you're not missing much).

Well there it is, I will make a review and end post that will show a complete 1-20 ranking so I will do that immediately after this one is posted. Thanks for reading!

Spring 2016 Anime Reactions (Saturday) SPOILERS

6 Shows, it is the most ever for one day in my year of watching airing anime. Some are good, some are great and some are in the middle....

Saturday (6 shows)

The Asterisk War Season 2-I'm Just Here to Finish it...

Synopsis: Ayato is the strongest fighter as he teams up with Julis to win the Fiesta as the strongest fighting team. Ayato also is trying to find the secret of what happened to his sister long ago.

Positive: The quality of the animation got better and the music is definitely is still good.

Negative: Just the same as the first season, generic, boring, unoriginal, and that one maid girl that showed up has he most annoyed voice ever.... that reason seems petty but it really is awful

If you want to see or read a better and more well thought out review of this show I suggest Digibro's why the asterisk war sucks video series. I think sometimes he can be a bit pretentious and jerkish in his review but I have to say I agree with almost everything about what he said with the first season of that show. The second season does not get any better. The main character is overpowered and will probably kick everyone's ass, the princess chick will fall in love with him, his childhood friend will lose and support him, and the cute loli with a big chest will be moe bait for everyone. I will say though, the music in this show is fairly good. The ending was better in the first season but I really like the opening and ending of this series. And the fighting animation got better from the first season. But it is not like you're getting anything different, Predictable and generic. There just aren't any surprises nor are there cool moments. And the maid, cute... sure.... BUT THAT VOICE. Its like dragging your nails across your chalkboard. To be honest I do not have much else to say about this show... You get what you see and it is not that great.

Grade/Summary: D- (Music is cool and the animation got better, but the story is unoriginal, the characters have little depth to them, and everything is predictable).

Ace Attorney-The Wild Battle of a Court Room

Synopsis: Naruhodou is a young man that has dreamed of being a defense attorney. After the first trail he learns all about the pressure and challenges of the court room. He teams up with Mayoi, a young energetic girl, to help defend the weak and bring about justice.

Positive: Even though I have never played the game, I can tell where the references are and it is nice to have those moments for the fan. Some of the wacky moments are fun and the courtroom battles can be awesome at times. Mayoi is also a cutie

Negative: The animation can be very sloppy. And I know it is the future and a tv show, but the way the law works and how things progress within the show is ridiculous and just dumb. The flow of the show is pretty choppy too.

I have never played the games so I came into this show with no really idea of what to expect. I understood the wild nature of the game but even knowing that, the show seemed too crazy even for me. What I mean is the way people are convicted is just too... unrealistic. Characters will just be considered guilty and the criminal with the smallest amount of evidence. I think in the first case one person accuses Naruhodou for committing the crime and everyone goes with it and now he has to defend himself. There was no real evidence. Someone just pointed his finger at him and now he is he crook. I understand that maybe this isn't suppose to be super realistic but it just seems dumb. The moments in the court room are hectic and crazy in a good and bad way. There are cool hype moments, especially when someone yells "Objection!" but it is so wild that I can not get completely into it. Kids jump into the middle of the room, Mayoi turning into the spirit of her dead sister so that she can help Naruhodou win the trail, and the comic relief moments for what are murder trials just seem... disrespectful? These moments just take out all the wind and hype of these tense moments. The animation is also pretty bad at times especially the CG animated audience in the court room, but it is getting better. After watching 6 episodes I have to admit I am interested in playing the game... but it is not like the anime has made me crazy for the franchise.

Grade/Summary: D+ (Below average animation and weird moments that ruin the flow of the show, Ace Attorney does not shine as bright as it could have despite some cool and hype moments).

High School Fleet-War Can Be Cute

Synopsis: Misaki and her best friend Moka thrive to join the Blue Mermaids (a naval army that consist of girls). They are put as captains on different ships for their training exercise as Misaki tries to learn how to lead and communicate with her crew members. Although things get dark when Misaki's ship is attack and labeled as a traitor while Moka is in a mysterious danger.

Positive: The mix of moe and tense moments is actually perfect in this show. The show is cute and laid back but provide some serious moments that keep you interested. The characters have some depth to them and the supporting cast all have quirks that make them interesting and the you really sense the comradery of the group. The animation is good and the knowledge of ships is impressive.. this show is really cute did I mention that.

Negative: Kind of episodic and the show's pace is pretty slow to me. The show keeps you in the dark with what the secret and suspense will be but I think the pay off in the end will not be as great as it could be.

When I first looked at this show in the anime charts, I thought it would just be some moe cute show. I thought about watching it but I skipped it because I did not think much about. I thought there wasn't anything to the show. My friend told me it was good so I decided to watch... and boy this show is pretty sweet. Just like you would think from the cover, the show is cute. The girls are adorable and they do not even need to use fan service bait which is always appreciated. But how it mixes the tense moments with the cute is amazing and that is where this show shines. How tense and serious the show got with the danger the characters are in with how they were label as traitors was a nice surprise. This was not just some moe show, there was actually some substance to the show. The characters also have nice personalities and goals that make you care. Misaki wants to be a good leader and struggles with that. The assistant to the captain, Mashiro, tries to understand how Misaki can act the way she does and why she isn't a stronger captain as she believes she should be the captain. And all the characters have their unique personalities that make all of them likable. The only problem I really have is the episodic nature it has lately and the main overarching story is moving slowly. Things are progressing but I think it is a bit slow. I also do not think the ending will be as grand as it could be with this story, but it is not really fair to say that because I do not know what will happen. Anyways, this show has been one of the best surprises of the season and a really interesting story that keeps you guessing and hooked.

Grade/Summary: A-(Great mix of moe and tension with a cast full of unique personalities and depth, makes for a surprisingly good show even if the story moves just a little too slow for my liking).

Tanaka-Kun is Always Listless-How the Mundane Can Be Fun

Synopsis: Tanaka is a high school student who is just always tired and lazy. He does not want to do much of anything and is always looking to avoid any tiring tasks. He meets a variety of students that makes his lazy and tiring live a little more interesting.

Positive: The anime is actually pretty funny. Sweet and cute moments that are hilarious or heartwarming. The animation is clean and nice. The energetic characters full of personalities are a good contrast to Tanaka-Kun lazy and boring character. Miyano is adorable and Shiraishi is cute as well.

Negative: The slow pace, while intended, can be boring to others and make the show hard to get into.

I may be bias because Non Non Biyori is my favorite anime and this anime has the same director but man this show is legit funny. Tanaka lazy personality fits well if the other characters. Everyone around him are bubbly that it works really well with Tanaka. The funniest thing about the show is Tanaka's best friend Oota and how he enables his laziness while he tries to stop it. He literally carries Tanaka around the school over his shoulder because he is so lazy. Their bromance is adorable. Miyano is so damn cute, as evidenced by the video and picture above. She is like a little cute ball of fun and Shiraishi is also really adorable... actually all the characters are cute. I also appreciate how the characters are smart and can read between the lines. There is a scene where Shiraishi wants to get Tanaka's number but she is too shy. Miyano looks like she does not understand and tell everyone to share numbers and exchange emails. Shiraishi is happy about getting her crush's number but then she gets a text from Miyano saying that she wishes her luck and hope she progresses with Tanaka. It was refreshing to see that the characters were smart and understood the situation and not just dense with no idea... it felt natural and realistic. Just like in Non Non Biyori, the use of silence and pause is great for the comedic timing and the relaxing atmosphere of the show is wonderful and puts the viewer in the relaxing mood. I get it can be boring but if given a real shot, the anime will prove that there is a lot more layers to the show and that it is a lot funnier than people might think from seeing the poster for the show.

Grade/Summary: A+ (While the pace is slow, that is the point of Tanaka-Kun... A slow pace with wacky and fun characters that make for a funny and sweet show with stellar animation).

Kiznaiver-The Strength of Friendship Put to The Test

Synopsis: Sonosaki (blue hair girl) tells Katsuhira (white haired guy) that he and six other classmates are a part of the Kiznaiver program that connects him with the selected classmates as they start to feel each others pain both physically and emotionally. How will they connect and work through their situation.

Positive: The animation is amazing. The basic premise is actually pretty interesting a bit interesting. The characters are interesting and their interactions and mysterious past are intriguing.

Negative: I think there is not much depth to the story. While the mystery of the show is interesting, I think it also makes the show confusing in terms of what it's goals and end game is. This will sound lame but there is just something missing in this show...

One of the more hyped up anime, Kiznaiver has probably the most interesting premise from all the other shows. 7 high school students sharing their pains both physical and emotional, there is a lot of potential in terms of story right there. In a story like this you need to have interesting characters and I have to say that most of them are. Katsuhira is kind of boring (but that is the point as he has no emotions really) but Chidori (Katsuhira childhood friend) is getting a lot of good development. The interactions between the cast is also funny at times, The way they learn each other's secrets and how simple and ridiculous they are makes for fun interactions. The progress of the story is good as well as I can make predictions about the ending. But at the same time I can't tell what the purpose of the show is. That can be good because it is not boring and predictable but I don't... I do not know if this is making sense but I just can't see the end game and what this show will be about. Like what is the purpose of the show? They connect and bond and become close and great friends... but what I do not see is why I should particularly care about that. The characters are interesting and Chidori has depth but the rest have no layers.... It is just hard to really care about what will happen at the end. There is just something missing in this anime... I like it but it is just missing something that makes it great.

Grade/Summary: B (Fun character interactions and wonderful animation, but with a story and cast that feel shallow, I do not see how memorable the anime will be by the time of the ending).

Flying Witch-How Slice of Life Can Cleanse The Soul
Flying Witch

Synopsis: Makoto is a professional witch who moves into a small town to go to school and live a normal life. But nothing is normal for Makoto and her witch powers as her little cousin, Chinatsu, learns about her powers and meets a bunch of Makoto witch friends. Chinatsu, Makoto and her family live their normal lives with the presence of magic and witches.

Positive: The tone of the show is incredibly relaxing and wonderful. The soundtrack is light and matches the show's tone perfectly. The character's are amazing and their interactions feel natural and are funny to watch. Adorable characters and amazing animation.

Negative: Might be too comfy and relaxing. For most, I think you have to be in the right mood/mindset to watch this show.

I love slice of life. I will admit the bias here but this show does it so well. I watch this show after a short Saturday work shift and it is just amazing and makes me feel comfy and relaxed. It therapeutic to my soul. First of all the characters are cute and amazing. Makoto is such a sweet and nice girl. The way she tries to practice her magic and how she always gets lost is adorable but her cousin Chinatsu, steals the show. I love how natural and realistic her character is. She does not just stay in the background, you will see her laying down on Makoto, interacts with other things in the background, and just feels alive when she is not involved in the conversation. The way she just pops out and acts like a realistic 12-15 year old. She steals the show with her adorableness. The interactions between the characters are great. The first episode where Chinatsu learns Makoto is a witch is a great example of great interactions. Watch as she learns her witch powers. Besides the awesome and light music that was just so realistic. Instead of bursting out and screaming she is just shocked and wondering "what the hell is going on." Makoto also does not just freak out and realize what happen. She is getting used to the normal city, she does not burst out as well, she is just acting normal and wondering what she did that was weird. Plus that face... fucking priceless. The best part about that is later in the episode Makoto flies with Chinatsu and like a kid probably would, she starts to get excited and tries to tell her brother that Makoto is awesome and that she flew and it was great. The realism in the show is great.... well witch powers aren't realistic but the reaction is. Speaking of reactions, the reaction face game in this show is on point, especially Chinatsu. I just LOVE this show. It is so relaxing and heals the heart. From the upbeat opening, to the relaxing show, to the sweet and catchy ending, to the wonderful characters (chinatsu's mother is great too and her brother.... and everyone is awesome!) this is a much watch. It probably is not for everyone but boy is this one great anime.... especially Chinatsu (I could probably write a whole post on why she is awesome and give examples that could take up this whole post).

Grade/Summary: S (While not for everyone, Flying Witch has a relaxing tone with wonderful and funny characters that come alive and eases all the troubles in your soul. A great soundtrack, crisp animation, and moments that are just so cute and funny, Flying Witch is a must in the spring season).

Well I am almost done, just Sunday shows so thanks for reading!

Spring 2016 Anime Reactions (Friday) SPOILERS

Well its the day before the weekend (where I watch half my anime on Saturday/Sunday) so lets get this going

Friday (4 shows: 3 regular, 1 short)

Concrete Revolutio: The Last Song-Superhumans Learning What is Right to Wrong

Synopsis: The second season of an anime that aired in the fall, Jiro now leaves the Superhuman Bureau and tries to help the superbeings while his former co-workers try to help the superhumans and wonder what Jiro has in plans.

Positives: The art style is very interesting and the animation in the action scenes are good. The designs of the characters have to be my favorite part and I enjoy the themes that the story and episodes have (ranging from what is right/wrong to love between two women)

Negative: Episodic and the progression of the story can be confusing to keep up with as you probably need reminders on what is happening in the story.

It is hard to talk about this anime because while its a second season, much of the progress of the show has already happen and it looks like the show is setting up for a big finale. Like I said, the designs of the characters are cool, especially the different kinds of powers and superhumans there are. I think they look awesome. But the story can be confusing. The show purposely jumps around in terms of timeline and give you bits of pieces of the past, present, and future. Usually the story does not go in chronological order so it can be confusing to keep up with what the overarching story is. Heck I am lost in the story and I have to review it to myself someday to fully understand the events and what is happening. But the content of the stories are great. The themes are really thought provoking and have depth to them. The main one being what is right and wrong and can anyone really distinguish between the two? I think the show does a great job at making you think about the themes and really makes you ponder on whether a certain character is right. Overall not the most popular anime (probably any comments on Reddit threads and you just do not see people talk about this show) but still really fun. Plus characters break dancing on the opening is always cool.

Grade/Summary: B+ (Overshadowed by more popular shows and a confusing narrative that can get you lost at times, Concrete Revolutio is still a great anime with wonderful themes and depth in the story along with cool action sequences with some of the most unique and coolest character designs I have seen.)

Big Order-The Ridiculous Train Ride That I Wished Ended Sooner

Synopsis: Eiji made a wish years ago that destroyed Earth. Now he is one of the "orders", a group of people with special ability that were given to them through a wish. Eiji has the power to control anyone in his domain and will use the power to save his sister.

Positive: I actually enjoy the soundtrack and music so far in the show. And the show is just so ridiculous that it can be entertaining some times.

Negatives: Story is ridiculous, the characters are crazy, there just so many plot holes (for a lack of a better word) to this show, just painful to watch.

I was wary when I learned that this was made by the same person as Future Diary. I didn't think Future Diary was good but it was entertaining in a good way... but this show.... not so much. The designs aren't that great (the main two MCs look like the ones from Future Diary). The whole "I want to save my little half-sister" thing is old. No one seems to think with logic (like why doesn't the main character just put his sister in his domain and control/stop the disease killing her?) And the weirdest things are happening that make no sense, like a girl getting pregnant because she her ribbon was grabbed or the show implying that the MC has sex(?) with his sister and then they just cut to a scene that they are half siblings. I don't know what is happening in this show. Lots of asspulls and just random events. This is one of those shows that it is so bad that you want to stay and see how much worse it can get or how ridiculous it can be.

Grade/Summary: F (Music is actually nice but it is so awful that you should just skip it if you can. No flow in story, crazy characters, and just bad writing).

Sakamoto Desu Ga?-The Cool, Cooler, Coolest Anime

Synopsis: Sakamoto is not just the coolest first year at his school, but the coolest student in the whole school. Girls love him and guys want to find out his secret and make him look bad.

Positive: Pretty funny and Sakamoto is nicely portrayed as someone with "swag" (hence his nickname Swagamoto). The moments are so outrageous and crazy it makes it fun and really enjoyable.

Negatives: There is not much to the show besides the humor, and the gag that Sakamoto is the coolest student.

My friend told me that the manga is funny and said that overall this was funny. So I believed him and decided to watch. It was weird to see a show based on my time in high school.... fine I was not cool in high school... But anyways, I thought that this show would be like One-Punch Man in the sense that it revolves around one gag and that is it. Now One-Punch Man proved that it had a little more depth then the one gag it was based around. This show really does not have much besides the comedy so far. I am not too disappointed in that though. The way the show is and the tone would make it weird if there was too much depth. It is just a silly show with crazy moments sprinkled in. And I love it. Sakamoto really is the coolest character I have seen in a while. Calm, cool, relaxed, everything he does is swag. And the fact that the other characters believe he will do crazy things (like dig a hole long enough to reach Brazil or summon lightning) is hilarious. I thought I would get tried of the same old gag and jokes but the show does a great job at keeping the jobs fresh as they never feel old. Probably one of the funniest anime I have seen. It may not seem like it from what I wrote but the show does a good job at being a comedy. It does not really do anything more than that but it does not have to. Just flat out good fun.

Grade/Summary: A- (Although there is not much beside the gag it centers on, the anime does a good job making it funny every time and there are just some outrageous moments that make you smile).

Space Patrol Luluco (short)-Justice Has Never Felt so Good

Synopsis: Luluco wanted a normal high school live but her world is turned upside down when her dad freeze into a block of ice. She now has to join the space police force in place of her father and deliver space justice.

Positive: Over-the-top fun, wild and crazy but it is well managed and contained within the show. Good animation with some great music. Luluco is adorable as well.

Negative: I do not think this is a show anyone can watch. It is definitely weird and very anime-ish meaning I think you have to understand the weirdness of anime to really enjoy this. I also think the humor isn't for everyone (but it is for me)

Just wild... that is the best way to describe this short. Only 7 minute long episodes but man are they fun. The animation is good but it is low quality on purpose so I do not knock it for animation. Most of the charm is in it's random and crazy, yet well contained, moments. The characters physically turn into guns to deal with bad guys and every episode is weirder but more awesome than the previous one. I also want to say love the blue haired office assistant that just does not say anything and follows them all. Something about quiet characters that never say anything is cool. I also have to say the Kill la Kill reference in the last episode was freaking hilarious. I know I haven't finished Kill la Kill (I have seen ten episodes) but I know enough to get the reference. But I have to say that scene perfectly describes the show. Wild, crazy, shameless, stupid, and flat out fun. One of the best shorts I have seen. The random moments may not be for everyone but if you like shows that are silly and do not take themselves seriously, then you'll love this anime.

Grade/Summary: A (Although I think the humor not for everyone, the anime is just so stupid its fun. People turn into guns, characters just scream and do what they want, and the staff do not take themselves seriously, in a good way, to make a short that is just plain fun).

There goes Friday. I hope you liked it. The Saturday shows will be done soon!

Spring 2016 Anime Reactions (Thursday) SPOILERS

Hello who ever is reading and following these series of posts. I hope you are enjoying reading my thoughts. Anyways I will continue with the anime on Thursday. Hope you enjoy!

Thursday (3 Shows)

Anne-Happy-The Unlucky Life of Class 1-7

Synopsis: Hibari, Hanako, Botan, Hibiki, and Ren and are in the spotlight for this show which pits them in class 1-7, which is reserved for the most unluckiest students. In class they learn and part take in activities that will increased their luck so that they and the whole class can have wonderful lives.

Positives: Very cute and I like the soft and light animation. Funny and wild. I also love the eye-catches the show has every transition. I also like the pun in the title of the show (Anne happy sounds like unhappy which is a reference to their "unhappy" unlucky lives).

Negatives: The gags and character quirks get kinda of old and some of the quirks are just straight up weird (Hanako is in love with an image on a sign, all females are in love with Ren).

It is your typical cute fuzzy show of the season and after the lack of moe and cute shows in the winter I actually welcome this show with open arms. This show can be ridiculously cute and have some great moments of animation. I also enjoy the teacher in the show. She has this tough, mysterious, but caring nature to her that makes her fit into the show well as she tries to improve all their luck. The CG bunny that helps her.... not so much. I think the CG just makes him stick out too much and while not the most annoying character I have seen, I do not really care or get excited when he gets screen time. I do love Hibari as a character though. She is just so cheerful despite being the most unlucky out of the group. Overall the characters are cute and fun and together they all get and have sweet moments. Like mentioned above, the gags (like how Botan gets injured easily, and Hibiki getting lost every time) can get old, stale, and boring. I also just can't get over the fact that Hanako is in love with an image of a construction worker on a sign, it just seems weird...

Grade/Summary: C+ (Not the most original and unique moe show but it gets the job done with a cute cast that are all likable, with some sweet and funny moments thrown in.)

Netoge no Yome Wa Onnanoko ja Nai to Omotta? (Netoge)-And I thought I Would be Tired of These Types of Shows

Synopsis: Hideki (goes by Rusian in the game) gets rejected by a female character in game because she was actually a man in real life. He tries his best to disconnect the two lives as he is approached by a female in game to get married in the game but he refuses. He later meets three of his party members in real life (all girls of course) as now he has to deal with Ako, the girl madly in love with him and his wife in the virtual world.

Positive: Ako has got to be one of the cutest characters I have ever seen in my life. The game references are relatable at least to me as I understand that kind of stuff. I like how there is also a set couple in this show and not some harem BS that can be annoying. Btw did I mention that Ako is cute

Negative: I think her "Yandere" personality for Ako is just there to be there and does not really make any sense within the story. The show is a little fan service heavy... well okay there is a lot of fan service. Also if you do not play games you make not understand the references and jokes they make so that can be a negative too. The show is also predictable and generic from it's opening to it's story and characters.

You know you just have to have these types of shows every season. The generic harem anime with all the fan service. I was not expecting too much coming but I have to admit, this one is probably my guilty pleasure of the season. Not the most original and generic characters and story development but it is done pretty well here (although that does not stop it from still playing the harem card). There is not too much harem mysterious in who Hideki loves and it is established well and early that its about him and Ako. Ako is also an adorable and innocent character that is just way too cute to ignore. The supporting cast is also fun but if you seen any harem before and know the elements in harems you can guess what their personalities are like. Well animated and I like the designs of the characters when they are playing their game. The show can get fan servicey many times so that may be a turn off. Ako Yandere moments also feel forced much of the time and just seemly comes from nowhere and is there just because the author can do it. She does not seem like a girl who would just be crazy out of normal and she is very sweet so the crazy side just seems out of place. To be honest, there is nothing groundbreaking in this show either. You get what you see. Harem, cute girls, fan service, some comedic moments, and a sincere moment throw here and there. Add more girls to the group and you have your harem comedy of the season. But that is why I enjoy it. I think the show is aware of what it is and does not try too hard to be funny or special. Like Anne Happy, it does it's job and it does it well.

Grade/Summary: B- (You get what you see, harem fan service with an incredibly predictable story, but the characters are fun, especially Ako, the gamer references are funny and the show manages to get a few good laughs out of me. With a clear romance objective, Netoge is a guilty pleasure).

Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress-The Hype Train that is Attack on Titan Season 2 Kabaneri

Synopsis: The world is infected with Kabane, a creature that is like a zombie and bites the victim which turns them into a Kabane, as the cast of characters ride in a large steel locomotive that travels throughout Japan. Ikoma and Mumei are the only two with a special power and knowledge that has a chance to fight and overcome the Kabane as the rest of the people in the train try to find shelter.

Positives: The show is absolutely gorgeous in it's animation and fighting sequence. Ikoma is a cool "badass" that is strong as nails, while Mumei is the amazing and awesome female lead that can put up her own fight. The music is great and like in Attack on Titan, the gore, violence, and helplessness is done while and you get a sense that they are in great danger.

Negatives: It is unclear on what the Kabane are exactly and who Ikoma and Mumei really are, so the show as a lot to reveal. Just a lot of mystery in what the show is going to be about which I see as a bit of a negative at this point. Deep down, not the most original unique story.

One of the most popular shows in Japan and America (I assume from what I see) and probably the most hyped show of the spring. When you have most of the crew from the Attack on Titan team on this show as well then it is easy to see why everyone expects a lot from the show and it has delivered. Ikoma, the main character, is a total badass. From fighting to nearly choking himself to death just to survive a bite, Ikoma is a BAMF that is fun to watch. Mumei is also awesome. Watching her fly across the fights and shooting down all the enemies is cool. It is not just them but whole cast are strong and awesome in their own way. I have a weak spot for steam punk settings so I really like that aspect and can I just say that steam powered bow and arrow is the coolest weapon I have seen. The animation is fantastic. The only problem is I really have with the show is that I can't see the end game. I know it is bad for a show to be too predictable but in my opinion, a show should be somewhat predictable and hint at what the story and ending will be like but I just can't see it here. And where did the Kabane come from? And how do Ikoma and Mumei know so much about the Kabane the powers they have? Did they research? Maybe I missed something and if I did please do comment but I just find that part a little random. Also, deep down, this isn't the most unique story ever. There is a reason why everyone compares it to Attack on Titan. On top of the staff, the story is pretty much the same and the aspect of a unorthodox weapon and humanity being in danger thanks to a mysterious creature just feels like Attack on Titan. But if I had to compare the two shows, I believe this one is better so far. The characters are cooler here, the action is top-natch, and the animation is great. The hype has definitely been fulfilled for me.

Grade/Summary: A (Action packed, cool characters, an exciting but unoriginal story, makes for a wild and awesome show. Exciting for any anime fan or not, a must watch so far.. btw there is no way Mumei is really 12).

I hope you liked this. Friday will be up soon. Thanks for reading!

Spring 2016 Anime Reactions (Tuesday/Wednesday) SPOILERS

Okay so let me address something about this list. Some shows will have a variety of episodes released. Some will have 4 others have 5 and a hand full will have 6 so it is not even in that sense but my opinions probably would not be different with one extra episode. Now I know that is not absolute but the opinions I expression are generally what I believe on how good the show is. Now on to the next set of shows... Remember SPOILERS!!!!!

Tuesday (1 Show)

Joker Game-How the Spy World Isn't as Great as I Thought.
Synopsis: During WW II, colonel Yuuki of Japan creates the D Agency. The Agency trains soldiers to be spies and master the art of espionage and manipulation.

Positives: The animation is great and smooth. The trivia is fun and interesting and the setting is cool with a cool noir feel.

Negatives: The episodic nature of the story is a bit of boring, and there really isn't an overarching story. Some of the stories can be fun but usually it has been bland.

It be honest I was pretty excited about this show. The "gangster/noir" feel to the show looked cool and the animation is amazing. But man this show as been... bland and unmemorable. All the characters look the same and none of them stick out. But you can say that is the point of being a spy. The fact that you can blend in and not stick out, but in terms of a show I think it is important that you have memorable characters so the viewer can care about something. I also was not expecting the episodic nature of the show. It has paid off in some episodes (The first two and the latest one with the train) but overall it has been very forgettable stories. I do not think the direction of episodic stories with no overarching story is a bad choice but I do not think it is has paid off. I do not remember a single characters name. Episode 3 did not include any of the spies and centered it's focus on some throwaway characters. It is just hard to remember this show.

Grade/Summary: C- (Animation is great, setting is cool, and the spy stories can be fun. But the show is too inconsistent and forgettable characters make the anime too easy to forget... plus what is wrong with this dude's forehead)

Wednesday (2 Shows)

Twin Star Exorcists-A Typical Story about Two Powerful Kids

Synopsis: Rokuro is an exorcist (they are people with the power to fight beast that live in a different dimension) but he does not want to grow up to be a professional one. He then meets Benio who aims to be the strongest exorcist. Later they learn that an oracle prophesize that they will get married and give birth to the strongest exorcist. They must now learn to live and work together.

Positives: I like the cuts when they do a special move when they fight and Benio is a fun character and the oracle was a wacky character too.

Negatives: Nothing is happening and that makes the show boring. Rokuro is a bit of a whinny character and the animation is not the best (but there have been some nice scenes). Benio little pet is annoying and serves no purpose to the story. Action scenes as a whole leave a lot to be desired.

I was not expecting too much from this show but I still was disappointed. I do like the aspect that they aren't the strongest exorcists but that their child would be so that was pretty funny. But the show is just predictable. It is just obvious that Rokuro childhood friend who have a interest in him. It is annoying to hear Rokuro complain and bitch about how he does not want to be an exorcist episode after episode and not really do anything about it only to be interested in it again. And that little white pet that Benio carries around... DAMN HE IS ANNOYING. None of his lines are relevant to the story and all he does is brag. It is pointless having him. Just an unoriginal show overall. Predictable story, characters, and events.

Grade/Summary: D (Some cool animation in parts of the fights but over predictable and unoriginal. There are just better shows out there and there is nothing unique to this one).

Bungou Stray Dogs-The Unusually Comical World of Detectives

Synopsis: Atsushi was an runaway orphan with no where to go. He then meets Dazai who is a man bent on committing suicide successfully. After some events, Dazai then brings him in to the agency where Atsushi meets other detectives that all have special powers to keep the city safe.

Positive: The comedy actually works well with this show for the most part. The interactions between the characters are fun and the animation is crisp and solid. Honestly the best part about the show have to be the characters.

Negatives: The story is starting off slow (but it is a 24 episode series so that is expected so I won't kill it for pace for now). The main problem is the tone of the show. Although the comedy works it is hard to take the show seriously when it wants to be.

I read somewhere that this show was a like Kekkai Sensen in the sense that the main character, that has a special power of his own, gets dragged into a detective agency that is employed with others with powers. And I have to agree. The loose and fun atmosphere that the show gives off is very nice and gives the show a nice sense of humor that is done well. Watching Dazai trying to find different ways to commit suicide is actually pretty funny (mainly because you know he won't actually succeed). And watching all the quirks of the characters and interactions is all fun and great... but there in lies the problem. The comedic tone and nature that the show gives off makes it almost impossible to take any tension seriously. There was a scene where Atsushi believe everyone in the agency will die because of his action but then he runs to the agency only to see the members beat up and get rid of the enemies in a comedic fashion. The comedic tone of the show just makes it hard to take any moment of tension seriously. The latest episode, they discover that there is a bomb that they have to defuse but I can't help but think that the problem will be solve in a stupid way.

Grade/Summary: B (Cool characters and powers, oddly funny and sweet, and interactions between characters are fun and great to see... it is just too hard to take the show seriously when it wants to be so it will be interesting to see how that will affect future story lines and how they are viewed)

Well there are those shows. Feel free to comment and say what you like and I will have Thursday/Friday up some time in the future! Thank you for reading!
